Reassurance Direction (RD) sign at
Bairnsdale. Note the addition of Buchan under the main sign. Buchan is
a popular tourist destination known for its caves. |
 |
The B500 (Great Alpine Road) starts at
Wangaratta and has the smaller administrative kilometre posts counting
up to Bairnsdale. In the past, the Omeo to Bairnsdale section of
the road was known as Omeo Highway (State Route 195) and at that time
the kilometre posts began at Bairnsdale counting up to Omeo and
Tallangatta (the section still known as Omeo Hwy). As a result of this,
the road has kilometre posts counting in both directions, the original
Omeo Hwy posts on one side of the road (left heading away from
Bairnsdale) and the current ones on the right-hand side.
Here is the B19 post 19kms from Bairnsdale. |
 |
Omeo, 100km post. These green signs appear every 5kms on most major roads in Australia. |
 |
Bairnsdale 20km post (just across the road from the OM 100 sign). Note the old road to the right. See also next photo. |
 |
One of several old alignments of the
old Omeo Hwy, this one a few kilometres west of Bruthen. It is still
trafficable due to another road and a B&B being accessed from it. |
 |
Another section of former Omeo Hwy
alignment. This is just a few hundred metres from the one in the last
photo. Several properties are accessed from it. Note the remnants of
the linemarking still visible. |
 |
At Wiseleigh, the Gippsland Lakes
Drive begins. Not part of the route on this page, but I thought I'd
include the RD sign anyway as it is an unusual format being a tourist
sign and with no route number. |
 |
B500 Advance Direction (AD) sign at Wiseleigh. |
 |
Wooden fingerboard type direction sign
at the same intersection at Wiseleigh. It would appear that this post
originally had another board above the existing one that would've read
OMEO HIGHWAY. |
 |
Still at Wiseleigh (which is almost
part of Bruthen). These Intersection Direction (ID) signs have B500
coverplates. One wonders what is underneath them? B620? A1? |
